The Reformation. The Lockharts were great supporters of the reformation, in the year 1545 George Wishart often preached in the Barr Castle. He was later burned at the Stake for his beliefs. The great John Knox in 1556 owes much of his success to the Lockharts of barr. Knox preached over a period of three years in the Barr. It is a true fact that the last vicar of Galston Alexander Arbukill closed the doors on Wishart and Knox. There was a Poem at that time... The Masonic Connection. Nearer the end of the century however things were about to change, Lodge ST Peter the Local freemasons lodge were looking for new premises, came to an agreement with the owner, The Duke of Portland that they would look after and maintain the castle if in return could practice the craft within its walls. So in the year 1894 Lodge St peter acquired the Barr Castle which they now own. Both the Lodge and the castle are very happy with the arrangement. I may add at this time that the Barr Castle is one of the oldest known buildings in the world used for Masonic purposes. |
